VAWA: A Path to Safety for Survivors of Domestic Violence

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allows women and men domestic survivors of abuse to get legal status on their own, without the help of their abuser. This provides a safe way for victims to escape an abusive situation.

What are the Benefits?

  • Legal Status and Safety: VAWA helps you get legal status and protection from deportation.

Who Can Apply?

VAWA applies to men, women, children and LGBTQ+ individuals. You may be eligible to "self-petition" if you are a victim of battery or extreme cruelty by your:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident (LPR) spouse or ex-spouse.

  • U.S. citizen or LPR parent.

  • U.S. citizen adult son or daughter.

What Do You Need to Show?

To be approved, you must provide evidence of:

  1. A qualifying relationship to the abuser.

  2. The battery or extreme cruelty you experienced.

  3. That you lived with the abuser and, if married, that the marriage was in good faith.

  4. Your good moral character.
