Traveling to the U.S. just got simpler for millions of international travelers, thanks to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Preclearance program.

CBP Preclearance is a program where U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel at select foreign airports inspect and process U.S.-bound travelers before they board their flight. This means all U.S. immigration, customs, and agriculture checks are completed on foreign soil. Upon arrival in the U.S., your flight is treated as a domestic arrival, allowing you and your luggage to proceed without further inspection by CBP or TSA.
Where Does The Preclearance Operate?
CBP Preclearance operates at 15 locations worldwide across six countries, representing nearly 16 percent of all commercial air travelers to the United States.
Country | Preclearance Locations |
Canada | Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg |
Ireland | Dublin and Shannon |
Caribbean | Aruba, Bermuda, and Nassau (The Bahamas) |
Middle East | Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) |
How Do I Find the Preclearance Center at the Airport?
When you arrive at the airport, your flight information may indicate "Preclearance" instead of a gate. Follow the "Preclearance" signs throughout the terminal. This area, located after check-in and local security but before your departure gate, handles passport checks and admissibility assessments. Look for signs directing U.S.-bound passengers to "U.S. Customs and Border Protection" or "U.S. Preclearance."
Check with your airline for guidance on the Preclearance process. They usually advise arriving an hour earlier than usual to complete these procedures. This involves passing through airport security and an interview with a Customs and Border Protection officer. Once cleared, you'll wait in a sterile gate area for your U.S.-bound flight.
Is Preclearance Mandatory?
Yes, it is mandatory if your flight uses the Preclearance facility because your flight will arrive at a domestic terminal in the U.S., which lacks facilities for processing international arrivals. Without clearing customs and immigration at the foreign airport, you cannot board the flight.
Travelers who withdraw from the inspection process are denied boarding and cannot travel to the U.S.
What are The Advantages of Preclearance for Travelers?
Preclearance offers significant benefits by treating travelers as domestic passengers, simplifying tight connections. It allows you to avoid immigration and customs queues, heading straight to your next gate without hassle. Upon arrival in the U.S., you skip all lines, saving time and reducing airport congestion. Overall, preclearance streamlines and enhances travel efficiency.
Preclearance is a clear win for travelers, airlines, and airport operations, making the start of your U.S. trip smooth and worry-free. Safe travels! Contact us if you have any inquiries.
