Traveling as an F-1 Student: What to Know Before You Go

International travel is an important part of the student experience, but it’s essential to be prepared to ensure a smooth trip. Following these guidelines will help you travel with confidence.

Before You Leave the U.S.: Your Checklist

Before you book your travel, always check that your SEVIS record is "Active" and up to date. Your Designated School Official (DSO) must sign your Form I-20 in the "Travel Endorsement" section, and this signature must be less than one year old. It's also important not to leave the country for more than five months.

A note on practical training applications: If you have a pending CPT or OPT application, it is not recommended that you leave the United States. If your OPT is approved while you are abroad, your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will be sent to your U.S. address. To re-enter the U.S., you are expected to have your EAD in hand.

Arriving at a U.S. Port of Entry

When you arrive at a U.S. port of entry, you will meet with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers for inspection. The CBP officer may ask to see several documents to verify your status.

You should have the following documents ready:

  • Your valid passport.

  • Your Form I-20(s).

  • Your student visa.

  • Your EAD card, if you have one for practical training.

CBP officers also have the authority to search your electronic devices. You can find more information about this process in the AILA Flyer on Searches of Electronic Devices at US Ports of Entry. Being prepared with all your necessary documents will help make your re-entry into the U.S. as seamless as possible.
